Meet Emily Kuba.  Emily is a senior from Jefferson High School, and has been at BIG for two years.  She has been doing science and sustainability based projects, and through her project work feels more connected to her community

“I’ve been able to create countless ties with the community. You learn so much more from the community than you would ever imagine. You learn things like how to run a business, how organizations operate, lifelong communication skills. Being able to learn time management and communication skills are huge. There’s pressure from a community partner, and it’s different than what you’d find in a teacher. Turning in your homework late doesn’t really mean anything. Keeping up professional relationships means something. BIG has opened my eyes and made me realize I don’t want just a generic job. There are real problems in our community, and BIG empowers me to make our community better.”
